Our Impact
In 1974, River Park Cooperative residents raised $1,650 to provide educational scholarships to youth in SW Washington, DC. As a result of this effort, three students received scholarship awards.
In 1975, The Scholarship Program initiative was incorporated as a SWNA task force to continue its goal. The task force continues to work diligently to raise money to support the program. Since inception, 562 scholarships totaling more than $515,000 have been awarded to 239 neighborhood youth.
In 2018, this very successful scholarship program has expanded to include a tutoring program. Robert St. Cyr leads the effort for the math and English Language Arts (ELA) tutoring at Amidon-Bowen Elementary School. Under its first year of operating , third-grade students came into the program two or three grade levels behind in math. At the end of the year, almost all of the students were either at grade or slightly behind in math. Participating in the program were 37 students and 22 tutors. This year the program was expanded to include grades two through five and ELA. Since Covid-19, St. Cyr has begun to organize virtual tutoring.
We count on the generosity of friends and supporters like you to keep this noble initiative going.
Thank you for your continued support!
